Mathematicians’ Assessments of the Explanatory Value of Proofs

چکیده
The literature on mathematical explanation contains numerous examples of explanatory, and not so explanatory proofs. In this paper we report results an empirical study aimed at investigating mathematicians’ notion explanatoriness, its relationship to accounts explanation. Using a Comparative Judgement approach, asked 38 mathematicians assess the value several proofs same proposition. We found extremely high level agreement among mathematicians, some inconsistencies between their assessments claims in regarding explanatoriness certain types
